Entertaining & Valuable5
I never imagined a self-improvement book could be so entertaining. I literally couldn’t pull myself away from this book, reading the entire book in one sitting!

Not having read the other “Influence” book recommended in Amazon’s reviews, I can’t objectively comment; however, I can say that “Artful Persuasion” is without question the most interesting and enjoyable of all self-improvement books I’ve read.

Knowledge Deployment 101 - 1034
Artful Persuasion is a compilation of tips, tricks and wisdom on how to persuade others, change their minds, align, and influence people favourably.
Just shy of 300 pages, Harry Mills introduces and expounds on the topic through chapters divided into ‘Thoughtful Persuasion’ (credibility, impressions, talking, asking targeted messaging. et cetra) and ‘Mindless Influence’ (contrast, reciprocation, consistency, authority, scarcity, conformity and liking). The book also features several quizzes, by-lines and diagrams to better illustrate the point. Oddly enough, the book ends with a chapter wherein an expected explanation on examples of influence and leadership goes awry and becomes a silly iconography of sorts.
That little biased narrative aside, Artful Persuasion is an informative book, even if it soon becomes apparent that there are no short cuts per se; just techniques that need to be learnt and practiced.
A bigger question, in the meanwhile, is the legitimacy of such techniques. You decide.

Good, yet lacking detail on some vital topics4
Like other books on the market, this book offers examples and case studies of successful professionals. Mills emphasizes the critical value of winning the attention of your audience or customer. Would like to have seen a bit more on developing the right verbal skills to permit one’s message to be heard in a world where everything demands our attention.

Must Read!4
This book has a lot of good info on communication. I learned quite a bit about how I communicate to others and what my body language is saying. There is some humor too and that made all the more enjoyable. Good book!

Interesting 3
I recommend this book to perhaps reinforce what you already may know. Particularly interesting was toward the end of the book where the author went into handling physical and sexual assaults.

Very superficial. A few good tips but shallow.3
I came across this book in my continuing research of NLP and hypnosis. Neither of which are addressed in this book. This book is a very basic and shallow guide to how to get along better with people. There is no magic here, no great revelations, just basic common sense advice on how to better interact with others.

I won’t say the book was bad, it wasn’t. However, it is very shallow and there is nothing in here that you wouldn’t already know how to do. I expected at least some detailed conversational advice and, while this book had some, it was very limited.

It’s a very quick read, very simple, and if you’re looking for a good two day read to help you polish up your people skills for a new sales job, or a presentation, you will probably find a few helpful tips in here. If you are looking for something deeper, this isn’t it.

You would be better off googling “how to read body language” and reading a couple paragraphs. Most of it is common sense or can be found in any magazine article. Save your money.

I wish I would have had this book a long time ago. It really helps to get an idea of what the other person is thinking when you are talking with them. I have learned to watch for tell tale signs now, and I know when to shut up or perhaps take a different approach.

This book left me with mixed feelings. I’ve read other books on the same subject and the information is old but it still works. Like the other books this was a fast and easy read. Again it is very useful if you’re in sales. Always a helpful tool to have. This book will get you started and sharpening your sales skills. I was fascinated by this book because it goes into detail about body language and how each body part tells the real message behind what we feel (eyes, hands, legs, etc). It was an easy read too, so I couldn’t put the book down. I found myself highlighting areas of interest. Get this book!

More than I expected5
When I read The Definitive Book of Body Language, I expected to read about crossed arms and legs, which way some one might be looking and so forth.
I didn’t expect this to go into such depth. A very good read and very informative. The only thing that might improve this book is a chapter on how to defend yourself from used car salesmen and politicians, but that’s being redundant.

can’ classify this book
This book is awkwardly written. Quite summarised, the approach used for discussing the PDEs is not familiar - see other reviews. The book as a whole doesn’t fill any gab, e.g. it is not a mathematical finance book, definitely not., see Shereve or Neftcie for an example. On the other hand it is not a tools or recipes book for pricing derivatives. It doesn’t do any function for me, just a waste of space. For every book I have - many, I can pick something useful from time to time, apart from that book, total waste. I am surprised of the book name, and who would be the target reader!!

Easy to read, very comprehensive.
I bought this book to learn about financial derivatives by myself. It is very easy to read for a first timer, no prior knowledge is required. It is also very comprehensive in its coverage of the subject. Overall it is a very good first book for the subject.

Not bad… but there is much better out there
Wilmott’s book was one of the first to tackle options pricing from a PDE point of view. The original book (now out of print) was a little more detailed and later superseded by this cheaper “Student Edition” overview on one hand and the “Wilmott on Quantative Finance” 3-volume set on the other hand. A per its title, this is an applied mathematics book, and therefore a minimal level of math is expected from the reader (so please, do not compare with Hull…).

Taking a PDE approach, the book aims at presenting various methods for pricing financial options. While the first few chapters are pretty good at skimming the surface of the theory and laying down the key principles of options pricing, the book, in general, lacks depth. Many results (prices of barrier, lookback, asian, etc…) are given without real development or simply with a little “hand-waving”. As soon as things get a little complicated, Wilmott just outlines the way forward and drops buzz-words.

In that sense, the book, while attempting go beyond introductory level topics in some details, does not provide great insight into the more difficult areas of option pricing and, lacking courage, simply goes through what has become the standard presentation without adding much value. Not for beginers, but not for more advanced readers either !

It is nonetheless an acceptable quick overview if you are looking for a refresher of key concepts. For a more thorough mathematical introduction to options pricing, You-Lan Zhu’s book (for example) does a much better job at covering the PDE approach rigorously (proving for example some of the convergence criterias for the finite difference method, covering the linear complementarity approach as well as presenting other numerical techniques) without being overly formal.

Sketchy2
Undue Influence would seem to have a couple things going for it: the book jacket claims that Charles Geisst is a best selling author of fifteen books. It covers an important and timely topic: the history of securities regulation, from the Crash of the 20s to the dot-bomb implosion of 2000. But it appears to have been rushed to print. There are parts of the book that are clear and informative, but there’s also a lot of bloated and murky prose that should have been edited out.

The Introduction illustrates the faults of the whole book: the first sentence is strong and vivid, but in the following paragraphs, the writing breaks into cliches, mixed metaphors (a cornerstone of the safety net?), vague generalizations, and outright typos and grammatical mistakes.

The index is likewise sketchy. The term ‘bucket shop’ appears early, without explanation. The index lists only one occurrence, on page 155, well after the term first appears, and the term is not defined there, either.

I looked for the Acknowledgements to learn who edited this (or failed to), but there are no Acknowledgements - maybe no one wants to be associated with this rush job.

If you aren’t already familiar with the history of securities regulation, look elsewhere for a good book on this topic.

Great background for regulation/deregulation5
Professor Geisst has done a great job of making all of the confusion about the regulation and deregulation of Wall Street and the banks clearer. His account of the trend toward freeing the banks from the 1930’s laws is very valuable because it shows the behind the secenes working of the different interested parties. The whole debate is part of the larger movement toward reinterpreting the past in a more conservative fashion and I found the book interesting for that reason alone. Reading this, I get the impression that conservatives reacted toward deregulation in the 1980s as strongly as the radicals did for regulation in the 1930s but the major difference was that the old regulations at least responded to a crisis, trying to fix it. The same cannot be said of the free market movement of the recent period. I found this book very vaulable.

Do NOT buy this book from Superbookdeals!
They misrepresented the product that they’re selling– I thought I was ording the ENTIRE Harrison’s but only Volume II arrived.

After spending much time on the phone with their representative, they came to the conclusion that it was MY FAULT for not reading their disclaimer at the bottom of the page in small print stating that this is a two-book set. I still have yet to see this disclaimer.

Superbookdeals needs to re-list this book under a DIFFERENT image and a DIFFERENT title!
I will never buy from these folks again!
It would be best to purchase your Harrison’s at a medical bookstore.

Did Buffett write this?5
I’ve read about 5 “Buffett” books and they ranged from utter garbage (the daughter-in-law books) to the mildly interesting. None really helped me invest better.

This book is different. I’ve read it probably 10 times now. Every chapter can change they way you think about investing.

The writing is clear and simple.

What follows is a totally groundless statement - i have zero evidence of this - but… the only other writer I know who writes so clearly on investment is Buffett himself, which leads me to suspect he may have been involved in the writing of this book …or maybe Buffet is the real writer. (apologies to mr vick - take my comment as a compliment if you really did write this)

Even if Buffett isnt the real writer, my guess is that this is the book he would write.

It’s my favourite book on investment. I have five or so copies at any one time and hand them out to friends who ask me for investment advise.

Misleads readers into thinking Buffett uses the exact method2
I am an avid reader of Warren Buffett’s writings, and I believe that Warren Buffett would disagree with many items in this book. For example, Warren Buffett previously described his method of discounting companies in other articles, and it does not match the author’s description.

I can see how this book would be highly rated to someone not familiar with the details of Buffett’s own articles and letters. But in my opinion, the book appears to only about 80% in agreement Buffett’s previous writings. This book can give the reader a good overview of Warren Buffett’s methods if they do not pay strict attention to the author’s details.

With all the recent kerfuffle about the real estate crash, why would you even want to look at this book? Well, for one thing, the recent rise in US real estate was amplified by very creative and loose lending, and by too-fancy derivative instruments. In contrast, this book goes back to the fundamentals of real estate investing. The authors emphasise traditional measures of cash flow as a solid means of assessing worth.

The book describes various types of real estate. Restaurants. Apartments. Condos. Shopping centers. And even raw land. The latter is perhaps the most speculative of all the categories in the book. It typically has the smallest cash flow (of course!). But it is usually the cheapest.

In many cultures even today, the aggrieved party is the father or husband rather than the victimized woman, but its victims can be men as well as women and children. Verbose
I bought Harold’s book to help me move from XHTML to XML and to handle data with PHP which does not fit well in a relational database / SQL. This book bogs down quickly in very long explanations & examples which could have been a fraction of the size. I think it has good coverage, but Harold uses too many words every time he approaches a subject. To paraphrase someone else, Harold could write 10,000 words on the color red.

The problem with Wiley’s Bible series (I have several of them) is that the goal seems to be to make them as big and heavy as a boat anchor. This results in verbose books, which may be ok for use as a reference but way to hard to read cover to cover for initial learning. The time needed to read these books cover to cover exceeds the value of the book itself. If you buy books by the pound (or kilo), this is a good buy. But if you value your time more than you value impressive size, there are better alternatives.

On a positive note: I have not found a bunch of typo or editing errors and Harold seems to know the subject. I’m just frustrated by the slow pace, although I will continue trying to read it at least a little longer.

Warning: [Some opinions given here appear to be by paid reviewers. ie: Feb 3, 2005, and others. How many others are also raw attempts to sell books without honor? Can you trust anyone who writes hundreds or thousands of 5 star opinions?? Heck no! Hint: Check out the person writing the review before actually reading it. Look for how many opinions he/she writes and how many stars. Distrust all high opinions in the first few months after publication, all high opinions by people who have only written a couple of opinions, and all high opinions from people who only write high opinions. Doesn’t cover DOM and SAX
I haven’ read the book, only browsed its TOC. It doesn’t cover the Document Object Model (DOM) and the Simple API for XML (SAX). It also discusses CSS in too much detail. These days, web development professionals will probably have a knowledge of both HTML and CSS before starting with XML.

Consider “Beginning XML” or “Professional XML” instead, both published by Wrow.

Pulp paper
I have purchased many books from Amazon, but this one is printed on the lowest-quality paper I’ve ever experienced. Though it’s relatively new, the yellowed pages look like a 1960’s pulp novel. There is literally a 2mm yellow border surrounding each page. Come on “Hungry Minds” publishers, you can do better than this.

I give this book to friends who want to get started in real estate investment. It is the best beginner book I’ve found as it touches on many concepts such as leverage, passive inclome, tax advantages that are foreign to the minds of too many Americans. He currently specializes in building application infrastructure using Java and Java-related technologies. He has spent the last several years implementing these infrastructures at Nextel Communications and Allegiance Telecom, Inc. Brett is one of the co-founders of the Java Apache project Turbine, which builds a reusable component architecture for web application development using Java servlets. He is also a contributor of the EJBoss project, an open source EJB application server, and Cocoon, an open source XML web-publishing engine. He is author of the soon-to-be-released O’Reilly book, Building Java Enterprise Applications.

Outdated, incorrect information. Stay away!
This book was written before the version 1.0 release of the JAXB data binding API’s. As a result much of the information in this book is incorrect and not current. If you follow the instruction in this book you will NOT sucessfully perform XML binding to java objects. For example, the book uses DTD’s as the XML description model used by JAXB. This is wrong DTD’s were dropped in favor of XML schemas. The instructions for using the JAXB jar files are wrong. The required jars have changed since this book was printed. The instructions for using the generated java data binding classes is wrong, the usage has changed since this book was written. The author tried to get to far ahead of the technology curve on JAXB and as a result authored this book too early in the JAXB life cycle. The book is of minimal value.

Waste of money
This does not talk about JAXB at all. What it talks is about some non standardised APIs that existed before JAXB.
The brief mention of JAXB ( 4 pages ) is only philosphical. Even that is w.r.t. an obselete version with DTD support.

The most valuable part of the book comes in chapter 20, where the authors offer companies a good guide to handling earnings releases and stock analysts’ conference calls. The least valuable part is the oft-repeated advice to companies that they should hire investor relations consultants - like the authors. We suggest this book to companies that are defining their investor relations function.

It is a real-hand-on book! Although the book looks very “huge”, the analysis helps me to prepare MBA class.

Real Options
Mun’s book shows how real options problems, like those faced in the real world, can be solved. Other books may provide a better introduction to real options concepts, but the methods employed are suitable only for very simple problems. Where other approaches require that you develop your own lattices (or other solutions), Mun shows you how to use his Supper Lattice Solver and Monte Carlo simulation software to solve these problems. I am convinced that his approach will not only facilitate the solution of these problems, but will also be more readily accepted by management. I look forward to acquiring Mun’s software and applying it in practice.

The Second Edition - A Great Practical Guide through the Real Option Debate
As practitioners and academics continue to grapple with quantifiable uncertainties in real asset decision making, the debate about real option models will no doubt continue.

I didn’t exactly find out about this book in a normal way.4
I’m a fan of musician Adam Green, who is the son of the book’s authors. I was on his website where it said “Adam’s parents wrote a book together” with a link. So I click on it, and it turns out to be for headaches. I’ve gotten migranes ever since I as little (and I guess all of my loud music doesn’t help). I ended up checking it out from the library and learned a lot about “managing my headaches.”

Dr. Mark Green treated me for migraines for about five years until I moved out of the area which made it very difficult to keep him as my neurologist (how sad for me!!). This book is written in the same style as how he manages his patients - nothing is set is stone, he is very aware of the many nuances of migraine as well as nuances of each patient’s physiology, and he is always at the cutting edge of technology. I recommend this book, and Dr. Mark Green, highly. (Since I never was treated by his wife, Dr. Leah Green, I cannot offer the same comments, but would presume that her level of excellence matches her husband’s)

A refreshing draught of pragmatic medicine
This is a truly excellent book. So often, medical authors are intent on impressing their readership with their knowledge of obscure minutae (a detailed knowledge of genetics and/or immunology seems to be key to a bright future in academic medicine at the moment, with public health and prevention appearing to be considered rather low brow !).

This state of affairs rarely helps the clinician or laboratory doctor toiling away at the coal face, trying to do the right thing for the patient without ending up in medico-legal hot water !

This book doesn’t do this. Instead, it provides the reader with useful insights into the rational practice of medicine, in particular endorsing the tremendous value of lateral thinking in medicine.

The section on Infection and Tropical Medicine is particularly valuable. Apart from man himself, the biggest challenge to our species remains infection, the only new diseases that will come along will be infectious in nature, the general public remain fascinated and frightened by infections (just look at the impact of SARS in 2003 !), and many infections are treatable and/or preventable if only we can get round to considering the possibility that the patient might have them !. Indeed, a patient’s best interests remain best served by their doctor retaining a supicious mind ! This chapter makes this abundantly clear.

The other sections are also excellent, especially the wonderful opening chapter on symptoms and signs.

I would not only recommend medical students and junior doctors read this book - many senior clinicians and medical academics would have their personal and professional horizons usefully broadened by their thumbing through this first rate effort.

I look forward to the second edition.

As the energy market deregulates and Brooklyn Union metastasizes into energy conglomerate KeySpan through a series of traumatic mergers and acquisitions, Moore helps the company “hold on to its soul” through a regimen of high-concept human resources initiatives in which employees meditate, create murals, do improv comedy and vent their feelings, initiatives that are also supplemented by random acts of senseless beauty, like sending anonymous floral bouquets to unsung workers. Nominally the company ombudsman, Moore displays a combination of sacramental and community-building roles that makes him more like an archbishop; he likens one of his HR functions to a Catholic Mass, another to the Last Supper, and even presides, decked out in priestly vestments, over a “funeral” for Brooklyn Union. Spiritual and Business-Savvy? Whodathunkit?
I work for an A/V company who does small trade shows and pharmaseutical companies. I ordinarally fall asleep during these presentations, but when Kenny hit the stage with his understated enthusiasm and wisdom about how the bottom lines of profit and spirituality can come together — and make both bottom lines go up for all concerned — I was transfixed.

All I do is run a sound board. I get a lot of free books from these shows, and to be honest I sell most of them on EBay.

I am keeping this one.

This should be a best seller!! BUY THIS BOOK!!!! Read why.
I’m not ordinarily a fan of business books, but I fell in love with this story about a company with heart, soul and a strong sense of moral responsibility and community. If we all lived our business lives like The CEO and The Monk, there would be no Enrons and all our bottom lines would be healthy.

There are so many places in the book that pull you up short and make you think, like the Monk’s recalling words of Oliver Wendell Holmes: “Most of us go to our graves with our music still inside us.” I felt energized reading this book, inspired to start all over again and make a difference. I am sharing this book with my staff. And, I’ve been buying copies and giving to friends who work in the corporate world. BUY THIS BOOK!!!!

Spiritually, Very Average……
This book is “ok”. If you use the track record of corporations to measure Key Span (Brooklyn Union), then what they’ve done is good, not great, but good. If you use a spiritual or moral measure, then what they’ve done is quite mediocre. The main accomplishment is that of the monk, Kenny Moore, who was able to foster direct and non-judgemental communication between the workers and management. This is a good thing and many companies would do well to learn from this example. Key Span does do a lot of charity work, but their motives for doing so, by their own terms of “enlightened self-interest”, are just that, selfish. The company pressures average workers to give up their free time to volunteer for charity. The result is that Key Span gets publicity at the expense of their unpaid workers. This is PR on the cheap and takes unfair advantage of the already financially strapped workers. They hire social workers to aid the company in extracting money from customers who are unable to pay. On the surface it sounds good, but it’s just a ploy to increase company profits by increasing collections. Much of the book is about the inside scoop on various Brooklyn Union/Key Span mergers and aquisitions, a bit boring. The rest is a lot of back slapping of both CEO and the Monk. There’s very little investigative journalism here in terms of exploring contrarian points of view. What Key Span has done is just “ok”, not great. They stand out not because of what good they’ve done, but rather because of what very bad other corporations have done. The bottom line, foster honest communication between management and the workers. The rest of the book is meaningless. It’s the same old same old, the workers toil in order to make executives rich. Nothing new. That the CEO and the Monk can’t see this is more telling than anything told in the book.

WANT TO LEARN ABOUT NLP?5
The first “how to” for NLP. Every time you read it you will find something new. NLP has changed much over the years, yet Frogs remains a classic. A definite “must have” for any NLPer. Also out-of-print so get it now.

my favorite NLP book5
I read this book over twenty years ago. I found the tools I got from the book still valuable in my process oriented hypnotherapy work with clients. The idea of pacing and anchoring were the most valuable. The book describes a workshop in progress, so you get the feeling of being there and involved with the practices. Unlike other hypnotic systems, there is an assumption that people are already in a trance that can be worked with. In a sense, we are always hypnotizing each other, but when we are more conscious of the process then we can make the changes that we want.

This book is a little hard to get into because it is essentially a transcript of a Seminar that Richard and John put on to discuss their views on Neuro-Linguistic Programming to other therapists… These are two of the founders of NLP and it was written in 1979, a time when NLP was trying to establish itself in the therapeutic community. This is readily apparent by the stabs the authors make at existing paradigms. The book does not mention which author is talking so it is difficult to get a grasp of who`s viewpoints are whoms, so it is assumed that both authors are in agreement with the concepts presented. If you get out of the mindset of expecting the concept of NLP being presented in an organized easy to understand manner, then one can glean some interesting information and pearls from this book that I will share.

The authors refer to themselves as modelers. Meaning they are masters of modeling others behaviors:
” We pay very little attention to what people say and a great deal of attention to what they do…The function of modeling is to arrive at descriptions which are useful….We’re not offering you something that is true just things that are useful”

They take a certain pride in separating themselves apart from other branches of therapy in that most of the other fields “focus on truth and may or may not get results.” However, they re-establish their status in the therapy field by modeling some of the greatest therapists in existence like Virginia Satir and Milton Erickson. There is included a therapy session by Satir with the authors explaining how she intuitively employs NLP by matching the client rather than trying to make the client match them.

They came up with the concept of “if what you do does not work, do something else,” which you would think was intuitive. They go on to criticize other therapists who label their clients as “resistant” and accuse the non-NLP therapist that they are shifting the blame of poor results to the client when they should simply be trying something else. To cement this concept they offered discuss an experiment from the eighties where the B.J Skinner did work with rats and mazes. One day, he decided to add humans to the experiment. Over several weeks he performed the experiment where he taught the rats or human to run thru a maze for the reward of cheese or a 5 dollar bill found at the end of the maze. Of course, he noticed the humans were quicker learners as expected. Further results were counter intuitive. When he tried to extinguish the behavior by removing the reward found at the end of the maze, it became interesting. After multiple attempts the rats no longer attempted to run the maze….”however, the humans never stopped!! They are still there! They break into the lab at night looking for 5 dollar bills at the end of the maze.” That is the peculiar trait about human beings. “If they find something they can do that does not work, they do it again.” Thus the concept of “if what you do does not work, do something else.” I could not help but to have visions of Las Vegas and people putting their life savings into the slot machines looking for the reward at the end of the maze.

There was an intriguing sentence on matching where they discussed representational systems and said that to establish good rapport one merely had to match the predicated words of the other person’s representational system. But if you want to alienate the other person you could deliberately mismatch the predicates. This skill could be very useful in situation where one would not want to converse like on an airplane.

Another pearl was their view on what words mean. “Words are triggers that tend to bring into your consciousness certain parts of your experience and not others.” So you cannot hear a word without having an associative experience. Since everyone’s experience is different. everyone’s perception of a word will be slightly different. This is called slippage. There is a slippage between the words and a persons experience as well as a slippage between two peoples corresponding experience for the same word. This is their explanation for maps of reality although they do not distinctly label it as such.

The authors went into a great deal of detail explaining to the audience how to attain visual acuity with respect to the eye motions indicating a person’s representational system that they are using. They did this with putting several audience members on stage and then asking them questions to see exactly what their body language and eye directions were. They went into greater detail with assessing one audience member as ” leads visually, represents kinesthetically and then has an auditory reference system check which tells him that his feelings are valid” I think part of this detail was to impress their audience with complexity rather than present an easily duplicatable system.

They do offer hope in their view of humans. They see people as having only a few strategies. That is why they are good at some things but not others. But by increasing the number of strategies available to a person, they claim that “if any human can do something then so can you.” I do agree with this statement as I attribute my life’s successes on the ability to successfully model other people’s behaviors.

Bandler and Grinder have a unique definition of conscious and unconsciousness. They state that the conscious is defined as whatever you are aware of at that moment in time and subconscious is everything else” Which puts a more tangible definition of what the unconscious mind is, as most definitions quantify it as a limitless entity.

During the seminar the author made a large arc arm movement that startled people. He explained the startled feeling by saying that the hand motion unconsciously told people to process what he was saying auditorily and that it knocked any visual based pictures out of the air. He stated that “if you can determine what a persons lead and representational systems are, you can package information in a way that is irresistible for them” He goes on to say that “the meaning of communication is the response that you get, if you are not getting what you want, change what you are doing.” This is similar to Genie Labourde’s viewpoint.

The authors site a good explanation for the NLP dictate to not use a negative when discussing a desired outcome. They refer to a child who is instructed “not to fall down.” In order for the child to understand the sentence they have to refer to their internal representation of falling down. That internal representation will result in the behavior the parent is trying to prevent. Positive instructions “like pay attention to your balance and move slowly” can yield a more positive outcome.

Concepts from earlier books by the same authors, The Structure of Magic, were reviewed with respect to the metamodel of eliciting more specific responses to questions. The authors demonstrated several examples of metamodel questions. They said to do NLP well one must have mastery over the metamodel questions, otherwise techniques will be sloppy. “Metamodel questions are the questions that really give you the appropriate information immediately”

The second day of the book discusses mirroring and crossover mirroring, gives some example of anchoring and collapsing of anchors and past experiences that the authors had with clients. Overall not as interesting as the fist day as they are merely trying to show the therapists how they have used NLP in their practices.

The third day, discussed states and several organizing principles of states which we find useful. The first principle is that it is better to have choice than no choice. It is the therapist’s job to broaden the clients’ choices. The second is the notion of unconscious choice. This is where a behavior is exhibited because it fulfills a need even though it is counter to a person’s stated conscious desire. For example, overeating as a way of compensating for a failing marriage. The third in that people already have the resources they need in order to change, if they can be helped to use them in the appropriate context. Again, the bally wick of the successful therapist. The forth is that each and every single piece of behavior has a positive function in some context and there is a difference between the behavior and the intention. So when someone exhibits bizarre behavior that is a good signal to you that the person is responding to something that is not available to the typical observers’ sensory experience. They are responding to some internal represented thought that is giving them an intended positive experience even though they will not consciously admit it. This is evident when examining unhealthy behaviors that fulfill a secondary gain of some sort. Examples are given on how to reframe these unhealthy behaviors by resolving the conflict between conscious desires and the program that provides a secondary gain. Reframing is accomplished by having the client’s sub-personalities talk the situation out and come up with alternative behaviors that serve the whole. If the behavior does not change or reverts, that is a sign that the new kind of behavior was not as effective at fulfilling the sub personalities desires in a congruent way and the discussion must begin anew. Several real life examples are given.

Over all a deep book for my first introduction to NLP. I found myself breezing it rather than reading it because of its more sophisticated intended audience of therapists. After studying Genie Labourde’s book a lot of what Bandler and Grinder discussed made more sense than it did when I re-read the book with more knowledgeable eyes. However, I could not shake the feeling that they could have presented the information in a different way and it would have made more sense to all audiences and not been so dry. I got the impression that they were fulfilling the publishers request for this years books and that they didn’t write one. The way they spoke in the book, they seemed to be the cowboys of their field. This is evident in the way they buck traditional therapeutics themes and their sometimes irreverent examples of their own therapy experiences with other clients. But sometimes it takes cowboys to rope the existing therapeutic community into seeing a new concept. Bandler and Grinder are perceived to be some of the godfathers of NLP, as such, I am glad to have experienced the book, but aside from its historic perspective, I do no recommend it to the novice NLP student

Super ECG review!
Very good for brushing up and strengthening your knowledge on ECG’s. There are some (minor) mistakes on certain interpretations, though, which is probably just due to first edition.

ECGs for anyone serious about ECGs
Over the last few years, I’ve looked at quite a few references about ECGs. Mattu’s book is certainly one of a kind. Split into two sections, each with 100 12-leads, the text begins subtly and works towards increasing difficulty and complexity of the strips. Each strip includes but a single description of the patient e.g. “46 year old male complaining of left chest pressure.” The reader can then form his own impression of the patient’s condition, and then refer to the end matter for a detailed explanation of the actual diagnosis.

This is certainly a teaching book. In many cases, I found myself formulating a diagnosis only to read in the back, “This is commonly misdiagnosed as [my guess]” or “This can easily be mistaken for [also my guess.]”

Initially, I was not quite confident text was worth the trouble. It does, after all, simply present strip after strip, with commentary in the back. But the text is structured in such a way that the reader can build upon knowledge and apply past failures at diagnosis to each new strip. I found myself making fewer and fewer elemental mistakes and developing a more complete picture of differential diagnosis as I progressed through the book.

Purely in terms of it’s presentation of uncommon variants to common rhythms, the text is well worth the price. I’m not an emergency physician. My interest is EMS and prehospital care. Regardless, I found great utility in this text.

GREAT PRACTICE
I’ve worked with Dr. Amal Mattu in the ER here at University of Maryland, and let me tell you his EKG rounds are always excellent learning experiences be they at 2AM or noon. The same can be said of the book. As a resident in Internal Medicine I always want to look at more EKGs and this book is aimed at the professional who wants to see good examples of the common EKG findings, and also the rarer things such as Brugada syndrome. Each EKG is paired with a short vignette and the answers are in the back.
